Starters you cannot play:
Every bye week this season →How to decide who to start
Five rules settle most start or sit decisions. Work down them in order and stop at the first one that separates your two players.
- 1
Check who is actually playing
Injury designation and bye week come first. A questionable tag late in the week matters more than any stat on the page.
Bye weeks→ - 2
Start your studs
A top-12 player at his position stays in the lineup through a bad matchup. Matchups break ties; they do not bench stars.
Position rankings→ - 3
Follow the role, not the name
Targets and carries over the last three or four games tell you more than a season line or what the player cost in the draft.
- 4
Use the matchup as the tiebreaker
When two players sit within a point or two per game, lean to the one facing the softer defense for his position.
Strength of schedule→ - 5
Match the risk to your week
If you are the favorite, take the steady floor. If you are the underdog, take the player with the bigger ceiling.
Comparing two players for a trade or a draft pick and not a lineup spot? The fantasy football player comparison guide covers what to read and how scoring format changes the answer.
On the bubble
The closest start or sit calls
In a 12-team league these are the last starters at each position against the first players left out, ranked by 2025 points per game. Nobody asks whether to start the top back; this is where lineups get decided.

Running backs on the RB24 line

Who should I start in the FLEX?
A FLEX spot takes a running back, wide receiver or tight end. These players sit next to each other in the FLEX rankings at different positions.
Who Should I Start FAQ
Who should I start in fantasy football?▾
Start the player with the better role and the better week. The DraftCall app makes that call for any two players: DraftCall Analytics names the one to start and why. This page covers the rules behind the decision and who is on bye.
How do I decide between two players who are close?▾
Work down the list. First, is either one hurt or on bye. Second, whose targets or carries have been better over the last three or four games. Third, who faces the softer defense. If it is still even, take the safer player when you are favored and the higher ceiling when you are the underdog.
Should I start a player listed as questionable?▾
Wait for the final injury report if you can, and keep a replacement from a later game ready. A questionable player in an early game with no late fallback is the riskier start. The DraftCall app refreshes injury designations through the day.
Should I always start my studs?▾
Almost always. A top-12 player at his position outscores a fill-in in most matchups, good or bad. Bench a star for an injury or a bye, not for a tough opponent.
Who should I start in the FLEX?▾
The best remaining player by points per game in your scoring format, whatever his position. PPR leans toward high-target receivers and pass-catching backs, and standard leans toward backs who get the goal-line carries.
Is there a free who should I start tool?▾
Yes. The DraftCall app is free to download, with a $2.99 a month premium tier that removes ads and raises the monthly compare cap. The stat pages on the website are free too, with no account.
Is there a who should I start app?▾
Yes. The DraftCall app, free on iPhone and Android, answers it for the current week: pick any two NFL players and get a start or sit verdict in seconds, by typing or by voice. It also has a Start/Sit view that flags bench players who belong in your lineup.
